Taylor Swift brought tears to Jimmy Fallon’s eyes during her surprise appearance on The Tonight Show.
Jimmy Fallon lost his mother, Gloria, on November 4 and took some time off. Upon his return, he shared a few heartfelt words with the audience.
“When we were little, my mom would walk us to this store, me and my sister, and we would hold hands. She would squeeze my hand three times and say, ‘I love you,’ and I would squeeze back, ‘I love you too.’ And last week I was in the hospital and I grabbed her hand and I squeezed, ‘I love you,’ and I just knew we were in trouble.”
During the same night, Taylor Swift made an unscheduled appearance to deliver a certain track from her latest album, Reputation. Sitting on the piano, Swift sang the last track of the album“New Year’s Day,” which includes the lyrics “You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi / I can tell that it’s gonna be a long road / I’ll be there if you’re the toast of the town, babe / Or if you strike out and you’re crawling home.”
No one from the crew even knew about it and the lyrics were actually part of the song and not something Taylor adjusted on the spot, which was a happy tearful coincidence.
I could see Jimmy silhouetted at his desk dabbing his eyes with a tissue. We all lost it. It was a beautiful coincidence in a beautiful performance. “Hold on to your memories, they will hold on to you,” Taylor sang.
